Confessions of a Teddy Bear
I have a small confession to make—one of the "luxury items" which I have brought with me is my teddy bear, Pookey. He was a gift from my mom in one of my last Easter baskets and has long occupied a place of honor on a shelf of my room. That's not the confession part, actually. The confession is that: though even as a small child—however I made a large pretense of it and truly wanted it to be reality—I did not actually derive much comfort or joy from sleeping with my stuffed animals, every night I have been here, I have slept with Pookey clutched to my chest on a strangle-hold not even the most restless slumber seems to break. Silly, I know—yet, for the first time perhaps, it is a great comfort to me. Though it is a bit disturbing to think I may have reverted to being four years old at some level. Yet, that is exactly what I am—even less, with respect to the language. I'm learning how to do everything here exactly as though I were a child again. In some ways, the loss of independence and freedom are crushing. In others, it is a magical journey of discovery and rediscovery.

I had a lovely weekend. I got a lot of homework accomplished, though unfortunately not the important paper I was supposed to turn in some time ago—power cuts and the inability to get anything done quickly have been hampering me. However I've managed to lay hands on a Constant Voltage Adaptor and (as soon as I can get an adaptor plug) will be able to use my laptop which will help 200%.

On Saturday, because of the power cut, it was beastly hot and so my host-mom, Prabha-ji took me to see a movie. It was a comedy and itself a sequel. The movie was grand! It had enough English sprinkled throughout and enough action that I was able to follow it quite well. This hoodlum had fallen in love with a radio personality—so he and his gangster brother kidnapped a bunch of professors to help him win a contest and a chance to meet her. When he finally did meet her, he lied and told her he was a professor and ended up giving a lecture on Gandhi. To prepare, he studied up on Gandhi SO extensively that Gandhi started appearing to him. The rest of the movie is about what happens after that... Unfortunately I did not manage to catch the title—but it's the big new movie that seems to be everywhere just now.

After the movie, we stopped at a boutique where Mrs. Singh (Prabha-ji) took me sari shopping. I was quite bad and spent WAY too much money on some very lovely saris! Then we went to a jewelers where she encouraged me to buy a pair of emerald, ruby, and pearl-encrusted gold bangles. She didn't have to encourage me TOO hard, as they were quite inexpensive (Jaipur is where many of the world's precious and semiprecious stones are cut) and I really wanted them. I only hesitated because she had previously told me that those kind of bangles were only for married women. Hmmm....

Though stressed about homework, singing, and language lessons still—I do feel I am finally getting into the swing of things. I'm a little frustrated at the "synthesis questions" as I feel the readings are very straight forward and do not, in fact, have any questions about them. Though tensions occasionally still run a little high, it seems I am (finally) settling in and moving into "stage three". Thank goodness!!

Big test on Friday—eeeeeeeek!
